Skin Structure
The structure of the skin is a multilayered system consisting of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat, which protects the body from external influences. The skin functions as a barrier, regulates body temperature, and is involved in sensory perception. The structure of the skin also plays an important role in protecting the body from infections and maintaining water balance.
Did you know that...
01
Three-layer protection
The skin consists of three layers—epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis—each serving its protective function.

02
Largest organ
The skin is the largest organ in the body, with an area of about 2 square meters.

03
Fingerprints
Everyone has unique fingerprints, formed in the womb and unchanging throughout life.

04
Temperature regulation
Sweating is the body's way of regulating temperature. In hot weather, a person can sweat up to 7 liters a day.

05
Skin color
Skin color is determined by melanin, a pigment that also protects against ultraviolet radiation.

Structure and functions
Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin, which functions as a barrier protecting the body from external factors such as microorganisms, chemicals, and physical impacts. It also prevents water loss, ensuring skin hydration. The epidermis contains specialized cells, including melanocytes, which produce melanin and protect against ultraviolet radiation. Interesting fact: The epidermis renews itself approximately every 28 days, serving as a form of natural 'detox' for the skin.
Dermis
This middle layer of skin is densely packed with collagen and elastin fibers, which provide strength and flexibility to the skin. The dermis contains important structures such as sweat and sebaceous glands, hair follicles, nerve endings, and blood vessels. It plays a role in wound healing and serves as a site of immune defense due to the presence of immune cells. Interesting fact: The dermis contains more collagen than any other protein in the body, which makes the skin strong and elastic.
Hypodermis
The hypodermis, or subcutaneous fat layer, is the deep layer of skin beneath the dermis, consisting of fat cells (adipocytes) that store energy, provide insulation, and protect internal organs from damage. The hypodermis also contains collagen and elastin, which support skin elasticity, as well as blood vessels and nerves. Interesting fact: The thickness of the hypodermis varies among individuals and different parts of the body, particularly increasing on the abdomen and thighs for better protection of organs and energy reserves.
Hair Follicle
Each follicle contains a hair bulb, housing cells that divide and lead to hair growth. Hair follicles regulate hair growth and affect its structure and color. Interesting fact: Human hair can withstand a weight of up to 100 grams, and all the hair on the head can collectively support the weight equivalent to two elephants.
Sebaceous glands
They produce sebum, which helps retain moisture in the skin and makes it soft. Additionally, sebum has bactericidal properties, helping to prevent infections. Interesting fact: Sebum plays a role in creating an acidic film on the skin, which helps maintain a skin pH of about 5.5, preventing the growth of many bacteria.
Sweat glands
Through the secretion of sweat, they help control body temperature. Sweat also serves as a means of excreting wastes such as urea and ammonia. Interesting fact: A person can lose up to a liter of water per hour through sweat glands in hot weather.
Blood vessels
They not only nourish the skin but also participate in maintaining blood pressure and managing blood flow to maintain body temperature. Interesting fact: Small muscles called arrector pili can make hair 'stand on end,' causing capillaries to constrict and retain heat.
Nerve fibers
The skin has a complex sensory network that provides sensitivity to touch, pressure, pain, and temperature. This allows for rapid responses to potential threats and environmental changes. Interesting fact: The so-called Meissner's corpuscles, located in the dermis, are especially sensitive to light touch and vibration.
